Easter: Rescue

DEVOTIONAL

Today's featured devotional...
I'm Luke Jones and I hope you enjoy today's Basics Daily Devo.
Lot was a good man, but because he lived with evil people every day, his good heart was hurt by the evil things he saw and heard.
(2 Peter 2:8 NCV)
Our good hearts can be hurt by what we see and what we hear. This happened to Lot in the Old Testament, while he lived in Sodom. We would all agree that there is a whole bunch of wrong in our world, and, if we are not diligent to guard our hearts, we can get hurt.

The Bible says in Proverbs 4:23, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” This is a verse that we all know, and all desire to do. It’s our goal to honor the Lord, and keep our hearts right, isn’t it? But, nowadays, it isn’t the easiest thing to do. It seems like everywhere we turn, people and media are flooding our hearts with the exact opposite. We don’t have to go far to see something inappropriate on TV or hear something that can damage our hearts and minds.

I thought it was interesting that the reason Lot, and so many of us, have hardened or bruised hearts is because of the things we see and the things we hear. Many of us have heard wrong things our whole lives. We hear things like, “You’re not good enough” or “You will never get far in life” from other people or even ourselves. If we don’t take those thoughts captive, they will take root in our hearts and destroy our potential.

The media is full of things that hurt our hearts. TV shows and movies are full of lies that will affect our hearts (sex, pride, rebellion, anti-authority, etc). We are commanded to guard our hearts against these things, but how do we do it? We need to put 2 Corinthians 10:5 to work, and take every thought or argument that brings itself against God into subjection, to the obedience of Christ. Basically, we need to guard against what we hear and see and not entertain the negative.

Here are some practical things we can do:

Speak words of life over others and over ourselves. A good way to guard our hearts is to guard our mouth.

Have selective hearing. Don’t listen to the doubters, the rude and the arrogant. Let stuff slide off your back and chose to entertain words of life.

Don’t go see that movie. I am by no means against movies, but we need to be careful with what we allow ourselves to watch. Don’t fall into the lie that “it won’t affect you.” Chose to be different. There are tons of shows and movies that are appropriate and fun to watch.

Watch what we listen to. Similar to the above point. (Whether that’s music or the radio, paying attention to this stuff will be to our benefit.)

Be careful on social media/internet. We are only a click away from deception and counterfeit. Being careful on what we post or what “arguments” to jump into will set us apart from others. Staying away and setting up blocks from certain sites and feeds will help us live a life that honors the Lord and our own integrity.

This list could continue, but these are just a few things that we can start to apply in our lives today. God has incredible love for us and only wants the best for us. Through His grace, we can live a life that is set apart and makes Him proud. Let’s guard our hearts and watch what we see and hear.

Say It: "Father, I chose to guard my heart and watch what I am hearing and what I am seeing. I chose to live my life in a way that honors You. I will take the negative influences that I come across, and bring them into subjection to the obedience of Christ. Thank You for loving me and calling me to be closer to You. In Jesus' Name. Amen."
