Everyone wants to succeed in life, and many people search for a magic formula or spectacular secret to guarantee success. But few people are willing to do what it takes to be truly successful.

It has been said, "The man who does the basics will be successful," and, "Success is hidden in our daily routines:"

Do you want to be successful in life? Do you also want to fulfill your divine destiny and be a spiritual success? Are you willing to learn and practice the basics on a daily basis?

On a sports team or in business, the ones who successfully execute the basics are usually the ones who win. The basics may seem simple, but they are vital.

In football, teams practice the basics over and over again. Players rehearse positions and plays countless times before they ever compete in a game. In order to run the plays successfully, the team practices those same plays over and over until they can practically run them in their sleep.

They may get tired of practicing the same things over and over, but the coach knows that with repeated practice, the players will know what to do just as sure as they know their name—the plays will have become such a part of them that they won't forget what to do in the heat of competition.

In the same way, we need to rehearse and meditate on and practice God's Word until it becomes a part of us. We ought to know the Word and be sure of the Word the way we know and are sure of our own name. By executing the basics of the Word over and over again, the Word becomes automatic. Then when pressure or problems come, we don't have to wonder what the Word says or scramble to find God's will in that situation; we can just act on what we already know!

Because we have done it so many times already, it's automatic!

In order to build a successful Christian life, you must continue to do the basics over and over again. What are the basics? Reading God's Word, praying, and walking in love are just some of the basics.

I want to focus on the first of these'what it means to continually read God's Word. I'm not talking about grabbing a verse here and there; I'm talking about hiding God's Word in your heart.

Proverbs chapter 4 gives instructions that are vitally important for us as Christians. This passage may seem elementary and basic, but our success hinges upon following these instructions.
My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings.

Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart;
For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh.
(Prov. 4:20-22 NKJV)
This passage tells us to keep the Word in our ears, in front of our eyes, and in our heart. In other words, the Bible is to be our number one priority and the foundation for our life.

The Word of God must be the foundation upon which everything else is built. If we don't build upon the Word of God as our foundation, then everything we build will turn out wrong. When it comes to natural construction and building, if the foundation isn't laid correctly, the entire building will suffer. And it's a very expensive, time-consuming process to go back after the fact and correct a faulty foundation.

Just as the physical foundation is the most important part of any physical building, so the spiritual foundation we lay is the most important part of our spiritual building.

Proverbs 4:20 says, "My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings." Another translation says, "Pay attention; listen carefully."

Have you ever had a parent, spouse, teacher, or boss tell you to pay attention? Maybe someone was talking to you and you could hear his voice but you weren't really listening to what he was saying. You were distracted and weren't paying attention.

With all the world's distractions, it's easy to let our mind wander away from God's Word. But we must bring our attention back or well miss something important! The second part of Proverbs 4:20 tells us to "incline our ear."

In the Hebrew, this phrase gives the idea of stretching or bending. God wants us to bend our ear toward what He is saying. He wants us to listen to Him!

In order to be successful, we need to put forth some extra effort to hear what the Word of God is saying. Pay attention! Incline your ear! Develop a daily routine of reading and studying the Word of God! Make God's Word a priority in your life!
