You shall not be afraid of the terror of the night, nor of the arrow [the evil plots and slanders of the wicked] that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor of the destruction and sudden death that surprise and lay waste at noonday. [Then]

A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you. Only a spectator shall you be [yourself inaccessible in the secret place of the Most High] as you witness the reward of the wicked.
(Ps. 91:5-8 AMP)
We live in a century with weapons that can quite literally kill thousands of people at once. Chemical weapons or nuclear warfare can destroy whole cities. But despite the magnitude of the disaster, God has promised we can stand in the midst of it untouched!

Notice I said, in the midst of it! Clearly, when God says a "thousand may fall at your side," He's not talking about heaven. He's talking about a place here on earth where you're seeing some disastrous things happen to the wicked all around you, and yet you are totally protected.

You are covered by an invisible shield. You are in that secret place that the world knows nothing about. When you're in that place, it doesn't matter how terrible your situation might be; you can make it through in safety.

(See Psalm 5:11-12; Psalm 27:5, The Amplified Bible. Put these scriptures in you mouth and confess them!)

Ken and I have a friend who proved that beyond any doubt. He took Psalm 91 into battle with him when he was in Vietnam years ago. He broke it down verse by verse and applied it to his specific situation.

To him, the arrow that flies by day mentioned in verse five meant the bullets of the enemy. So he would say, "I shall not be afraid of the terror of the night nor the bullets of the enemy." The pestilence that stalks in darkness and the destruction and sudden death that surprise and lay waste at noonday meant the Viet Cong and the deadly booby traps they had set.

And when he read that a thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you he knew he would be protected even in open combat. So he would agree and say, "I'll only observe these things, I won't be a victim of them."

Do you know he came through that war untouched? He had been in the midst of heavy fighting, in some of the most dangerous places in Vietnam, yet he believed God for his deliverance and walked away unharmed.

How could that happen? Look again at Psalm 91:4:
He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings shall you trust and find refuge; His truth and His faithfulness are a shield and a buckler.
(Ps. 91:4)
Our friend was hidden from the enemy. God covered him up like a mother eagle covers her babies by spreading her feathers over them. The devil couldn't get to him because God's truth and faithfulness were the shield and buckler, which kept the enemy at bay.
