Let us begin where we left off in our previous article discussion about "Keys to a Successful Prayer Life." We were talking about Romans 8:26-28. These scriptures show us how important it is to pray in the Spirit or in "other tongues."

Thank God for this heavenly, supernatural language. God has given us this language as a result of being baptized in the Holy Spirit according to Acts 2:4. God is infinite and we are finite. He knows all things and we don't.

Some say, "If speaking in tongues is from God, how come Jesus didn't pray in tongues?" I'm glad you asked. Jesus had the Spirit of God with out measure. He didn't need to speak in "tongues." We do. As individuals, we do not have the Spirit of God operating in and through our lives, without measure, as Jesus did.

But corporately, as the Body of Christ, we do. All of us together make up Christ's Body here on earth and all of us together have the Spirit of God without measure. So we need one another and this heavenly language of speaking and praying in other tongues, so we can pray beyond our natural understanding when we don't know how to pray.

The word "weaknesses" in Romans 8:26, in the Greek, is astheneia. It means feebleness in body or mind; without strength, weak. This verse is saying that the Holy Spirit will help us when we are feebleminded, not knowing how or what to pray for in a situation.

He will also help us when we lack physical strength to pray. When the problem is so unbearable, the Holy Spirit will help us pray in other tongues so we don't even have to think or have the strength to pray.

Have you ever been in such a dilemma that you didn't know what to pray and even lacked the strength to move? Well, this is the weakness Romans 8:26 is talking about.

In verses 27 and 28, we see that when we are in this situation and the Holy Spirit helps us to pray, God hears these prayers and becomes a Partner with us and the Holy Spirit in our prayer labor in tongues; therefore, all things work together and are fitting into a plan for good to and for those who love God and are called according to His design and purpose.

Glory Hallelujah!

Most Christians take this verse out of the proper context. They say that all things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose. The point being, if you love God everything is going to work out for you.

Well this is true in a sense, but this verse isn't talking about "loving God." This verse hinges and works for you when you do verses 26 and 27…when you pray in the Holy Spirit because you don't know what or how to pray, then all things work out for our good because the Holy Spirit knows exactly how and what to pray for in every situation.

The perfect will of God is being prayed when you pray in tongues or in the Holy Spirit.

In 1 Corinthians 14:2 it says, "For one who speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands or catches his meaning, because in the Holy Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things not obvious to the understanding." When we pray in the Holy Spirit we are speaking to God hidden truths and secret things that we don't know about but the Holy Spirit does.

That is why our praying in tongues is so effective and gets the job done. Notice it is the Holy Spirit giving you the utterance. It is the Holy Spirit using you to speak. It is not the Holy Spirit speaking. If you do not open your mouth and begin to speak out, nothing will come out of your mouth.

Example: If you want to say good morning to someone and you just open your mouth without saying the words, nothing will be heard or spoken and the person you are saying good morning to won't hear you.

You must do the speaking as you are impressed by the Holy Spirit to speak. It takes faith to speak in tongues, but it is God's will, and faith begins where God's will is known!

God will not just invade this natural realm we live in. We must invite Him into our lives and into this earthly realm through prayer and through speaking His Word. By yielding ourselves to prayer, we are joining forces with God to get His will done on earth.

You no longer have to wonder or doubt if God hears your prayers or will answer your prayers. You have scripture showing you how to pray and how to get your prayers answered.

One more important point is found in Mark 11:25. This verse says, "And when you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him and let it drop in order that your Father Who is in heaven may also forgive you your own failings and shortcomings and let them drop."

Notice it says, "When you stand praying, forgive."

Unforgiveness towards anyone will hinder you from being forgiven and will hinder your prayers from being answered. Don't be a fool and hold a grudge against anyone, because in reality what you're doing is saying "my grudge against so-and-so is more important to me than being obedient to God and more important than getting my prayers answered. That's being a fool!

The formula for effective praying is:
  1. Find out the Will of God from His Word and pray according to it.
  2. Pray to the Father God in the Name of Jesus.
  3. Abide vitally united to God and let His Words remain in you and continue to live in your heart.
  4. Let the Holy Spirit help you pray in tongues when you don't know how to pray as you ought.
  5. And always forgive and don't hold anything against anyone, let it go!
May you have a joyful and productive prayer life. In future articles we will discuss the different kinds of prayer mentioned in the Word of God.
