A soldier on assignment in a foreign land doesn't get up in the morning wondering how he (or she) is going to entertain himself that day. He doesn't spend his time sightseeing. He isn't there to have a good time; He is there for a purpose.
There is one question every born again child of God should be able to answer in a heartbeat. Left unasked, this question could cost us our destiny and our eternal reward. Left unanswered, this question could cost countless souls their eternal lives.

What is Your Mission?
Someone might say, "Well, Lynne, that's a complicated question. It's a tough one to answer."

No, it's not. It's a simple, basic question. And those of us who want to be good soldiers of the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Tim. 2:3) have a right and a responsibility to know the answer to it. In a natural or earthly army, every soldier knows his mission.

We could go to Iraq today or to Afghanistan and ask any U.S. soldier what his mission there is, and he would instantly be able to tell us. His mission is constantly on his mind. Everything he does centers around fulfilling that mission.

A soldier on assignment in a foreign land doesn't get up in the morning wondering how he (or she) is going to entertain himself that day. He doesn't spend his time sightseeing. He isn't there to have a good time.

He is there for a purpose, and his goal every day is to follow the orders of his commanding officer and do his part to accomplish that purpose.

In the same way, every Christian has a purpose on this earth. Our heavenly Father "has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love" (Col. 1:13 NKJ).

But instead of transferring us immediately to our heavenly homeland, God left us on this earth to fulfill His divine mission. What is that mission?

We are ambassadors of heaven, sent to penetrate the darkness with God's light. We are heavenly emissaries on a mission to bring those who have been estranged from God through sin back into harmony with Him through Jesus Christ our Lord.

As 2 Corinthians 5:18-20 says, God:
...has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ....
Think about what it means to be an ambassador for Christ! An ambassador is a person who holds a diplomatic position and is sent by his government to live in another nation as a representative of his homeland.

An ambassador doesn't go to that nation just to enjoy himself. He's not there on vacation. He's not there to become a citizen of that nation. He is there to do work on behalf of his own nation.

As I've traveled to other nations, I've noticed that ambassadors usually live very well. They may be on assignment representing their government in a very poor nation, but they don't live in a cardboard hut in the bad part of town.

An American ambassador to Mozambique, for example, won't live in poverty while he is there. The U.S. government will see to that because he is representing them and they want him to represent them well. They will see to it that he lives in security, dignity, and honor.

Ambassadors never go to a nation and just blend in to the environment around them. They stand out because they're representing something greater than themselves. They carry the authority that their homeland represents, and they do so in a very visible way.

The same is true for us as heavenly ambassadors! Even though we are living on the earth and we are constantly surrounded by the kingdom of darkness, the Lord Jesus Christ who is the governing head of our homeland has provided for us everything we need to live blessed and secure lives.

"His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness" (2 Peter 1:3 NKJ). He has given us natural provision and His own, supernatural power so that we can properly represent Him.

And if we'll just trust Him and walk by faith, He'll see to it that even in this impoverished, war-torn world "we shall not lack any good thing" (Ps. 34:10 NKJ).
