The day I became a father, my job description changed. It's the same for every man.

When you get married, as a husband, you are called to love, lead and provide (Eph. 5:25 -29, 1 Cor. 11:3, 1 Tim. 5:8). When you become a father or parent, however, there are job descriptions you've never had before and those are: to train and teach.

WHAT THE WORD SAYS
Parents are to train and teach their children.
Genesis 18:19 (NIV) “For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children, and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD, by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NIV) These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Ephesians 6:4 (NIV) Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Colossians 3:21 (NIV) Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.

Proverbs 22:6 (NIV) Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.
Parenting is different than marriage - it's a whole new job description that you've never had before. As fathers, you continue the old job description. You love them, you lead them, and provide, but if we don't train and teach the next generation we've missed the whole point.

Top 10 "To Do" List for Dads
1. Love their mother.
(Eph. 5:25)
Single greatest thing a dad can do.

2. Love your children unconditionally.
(1 Corinthians 13:4-7)
Love is patient, kind, not jealous, boastful, proud, or rude. Does not demand it's own way, is not irritable, keeps no record of being wronged, does not rejoice about injustice, but rejoices when truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful and endures through every circumstance.

3. Grow up.
(2 Peter 3:18)
My children don't need another friend, they need a dad. They want someone who can make tough decisions, someone they can count on.

4. Be There.
(Hebrews 13:5)
Quality time has never topped quantity time. Everyone has the same 24 hrs. Make it count.

5. Provide.
(1 Timothy 5:8)
But those who won't care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers.

6. Discipline.
(Ephesians 6:1-4)
(6:4) Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with discipline and instruction of the Lord.

7. Educate.
(Proverbs 4:13)
People get paid for two things: what they know and  what they can do. If I don't know more than anyone else or I can't do more than anyone else, I don't get paid more than anyone else.

8. Raise them to leave home.
(Proverbs 22:6)
Children are a gift from God. Our job is to train them, teach them, and equip them to be productive men and women of God. Adulthood!

9. Teach them to be responsible.
(Galatians 6:4-5)
"Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won't need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct."
Everyone needs to own up, clean up, and get moving forward.

10. Love Life.
(Luke 6:40)
A child when fully taught will be just like their teacher.
Psalm 118:24 says, "This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it." Happy parents usually produce happy children.

It's never too early or too late. Don't let the enemy get you immobilized with guilt or regret. Our latter days will be better than our former, we are moving from faith to faith and glory to glory. Where we lack wisdom, God will give us wisdom when we ask Him.

Let's enjoy the journey!
