Be Holy in All You Do

by Lynne Hammond | Devotions for the Praying Heart

Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”
1 Peter 1:13–16

My dear praying friend, we must employ true spiritual discipline to help us get in position right now. Spiritual places are calling. God wants us to come up higher in Him. He wants us to be holy in our conduct—in everything we think and say and do—just as He is holy.

We are in the last days and we’ve never known days like this before. It is for us like it was for the Israelites in the days before Joshua led them across the Jordan.  God said to them, “…you have not passed this way before…Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you” (Joshua 3:4–5).

Just like the Israelites, you and I must sanctify ourselves. We must set ourselves apart more and more—not just from ungodly and natural distractions but unto God Himself. We must draw ever nearer to Him because He is calling us upward to walk in places we have never walked before.

As we do, He will surely do great wonders among us!

I could write on and on about these things. But I know the Holy Spirit will keep on speaking to you about them and showing you all you need to know.  So keep your ear tuned to His voice, keep praying, and keep moving upward in Him.

On the chilly March night in 1972 when Lynne Hammond took her first step into a life of Spirit-led prayer, she had no idea what was about to happen. All she knew was the hunger in her heart for God wouldn’t let her sleep. In the few short months she’d been born again, her desire to fellowship with Him had grown so strong she could hardly contain it. “Help me, God!” she cried. “I want to know you. I want to be able to talk to you. Please, teach me to pray!”

Suddenly, a heavenly presence flooded the room. Lynne sensed waves of spiritual fire sweeping over her and a beautiful language began to flow like a river from within her. Although she’d never heard of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, she knew instantly, without a doubt—this was God!

What began that night soon blossomed into a life of prayer that ultimately became a ministry of prayer when, in 1980, Lynne and her husband, Mac, founded Living Word Christian Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Under Lynne’s leadership, the prayer ministry at Living Word has become an internationally recognized model for developing effective pray-ers in the local church.

A teacher and an author, Lynne publishes a newsletter called Prayer Notes, has written numerous books, and currently serves as the national prayer director for Daughters for Zion. Her passion for inspiring and leading others into the life of Spirit-led prayer continues to take her around the world to minister to believers whose heart cry, like hers, is “Lord, teach me to pray!”
