This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
This verse describes all who read it. Jesus came into the world to save sinners and Paul said that this saying is true. Paul proclaimed that he was the worst sinner of them all. But Paul was describing the condition of his life before he was saved and not after he was saved.
The Message Bible says: Here’s a word you can take to heart and depend on: Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. I’m proof—Public Sinner Number One.
The phrase “of whom I am chief” may also be accurately written, “of whom I have been chief.” Did Paul continue in his “chief sinner” ways after Jesus had redeemed him? No, Jesus gives salvation to sinners. We will never be the same as we were. Our life turns from darkness to light, from death to life. Wow, being saved by Jesus is really something.
I was a sinner but now I’m a new person in Christ Jesus, redeemed and saved.
