When Jesus was on the earth He spent a lot of time with His disciples training them for the life the God had designed for them. I often think about what it would have been like to follow Jesus, or maybe what it would have been like to hear Him say “Come follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” There must have been something about the situation that caused these men to drop everything in their lives, families, jobs, and everything else and just walk away to follow Jesus. What is it that would cause others to follow so readily, it could be nothing short of the Spirit of God drawing them. Let’s look at it in Matt. 4:18-21.
And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him. Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them….
(Matt. 4:19-21 NKJV)
The Spirit of God was drawing them, but drawing them to what? To be fishers of men, of course. And why fishers of men? Because that was their call. The eternal destiny that God had in mind for them before they were even born. One of the things that we need to realize here is that they weren’t going to just fall into that destiny; someone, in this case Jesus, had to come and make them into who God had always intended for them to be.
The question is who is making us? Today Jesus doesn’t walk on the earth in physical form like he did with those disciples, but He still has a plan to help us be who God created us to be. The Father has sent the Holy Spirit to teach us, Jesus has given us apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers, and we have a rich treasure in God’s word. With these tools and blessings we too, just like those disciples who later became apostles, can learn to be who God always planned us to be—His children.
Have you heard Jesus say,”Come, follow me”? Are you allowing yourself to be made? I hope so because just like those disciples, your eternal destiny awaits.
