Living according to old attitudes and patterns means being captive to whimsical impulses and past conditioning. But those who live in a new relationship with God are directed by the Spirit.
When you have a relationship with God, the urge to overcome your estrangement through your own effort is under control, and your spirit is truly free to direct your life. We don’t owe anything to the old way of life to live according to its dictates, because to do so means death.
However, when we control our human desires under the direction of the Spirit, we have a fuller, richer life.
