Familiarity with Sin Brings Acceptance

by Larry Ollison | Devotions, The Cutting Edge

Colossians 1:13 says; “He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love.”

Every single day of your life you have to decide if you are going to live according to the kingdom of God or the kingdom of darkness. In order to make the right decision, you have to be able to recognize the differences between the two kingdoms.

The world’s way of thinking and acting has become so deep-rooted in people’s minds, that they are actually blind to it. People are so familiar with the world, that they don’t even notice it any more. They have been around ungodliness for so long, that to them, it’s just normal.

A good friend of mine told me about a discovery he made when he was a child. His parents purchased a new refrigerator for their home. They moved the old refrigerator from their home to their place of business.

During the first few days with the new refrigerator, my friend said that it was making all kinds of noise. The hum of the motor sounded strange to his ears. He was aware of it all the time, because it was new.

He was having a hard time getting used to the new refrigerator because of the sound it made. He didn’t think the old refrigerator was that noisy. A few days later he was at his father’s office. He went into the kitchen to compare the new refrigerator to the old one.

Much to his surprise, the old refrigerator was much, much noisier then the new one. But, because he had listened to it for so long, he got used to it, to the point that he didn’t even hear it anymore.

The same thing happens to people who live by a noisy street. After a certain period of time, they get used to the noise and they don’t even hear the traffic anymore.

We Can’t Become Jaded Christians
As a Christian, you have to make sure that this is not happening spiritually in your life. By living in a world full of selfishness, hatred, bitterness, lust and violence, it can become easy to accept these worldly ways as normal.

If these are the things you see and hear all day long, within time they’ll become acceptable to you because you’ve grown accustomed to them.

The word jaded means dulled from overuse. If you are not careful to keep God and His Word before your eyes on a daily basis, you can become jaded to the ways of this world. Your senses can become so dull, that you don’t even notice it anymore.

That’s how Satan leads us away from God. The devil tries to make us believe that certain attitudes and behavioral patterns are normal, when they are actually contrary to the kingdom of God.

So, what’s the solution? Well, the Bible tells us that we must daily renew our minds through the washing of the Word. We must fill our minds with the good news of God’s Word and offset the bad news of the world.

As Christians, we live in the world but we are not of it and we are to walk by faith. Second Corinthians 5:7 says, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

The only way to walk by faith is hear the Word of God, meditate on it, believe it and act on it. Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.”
