Four Sources Of Wisdom

by Dick Mills | The Spirit Filled Believer

“This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish – But the wisdom that is from above is first pure…” (James 3:15,17).

There is a sentence in the Anglican prayer book that reads: “Deliver us from the world, the flesh, the devil.” That sentence was drawn from this verse in James. Earthly refers to the world. Sensual is the equivalent of the flesh. Devilish has to do with Satan and his demons. Verse 17 of this passage contains a reference to the true wisdom, which is from above. Thus these verses deal with four kinds or sources of wisdom.

Earthly Wisdom is centered in the human intellect. As beneficial as it may be to us in this life, since it deals with matters of time and not eternity, it does not adequately prepare us for the other world.

Sensual Wisdom is centered in the human body. This wisdom comes to us through the senses and relates to the world of entertainment, advertising, art, fashion, and recreation. It appeals to the flesh or physical side of man. It too fails to equip for eternity.

Devilish Wisdom is centered in the spirit realm. It can be found in horoscopes, Ouija boards, tarot cards, séances, and other occultic activities. Its danger is that it leads people away from the truth of God and opens them up to the lies and deception of the enemy

Wisdom From Above is centered in the Holy Spirit. It is God-given wisdom. It originates from outside of man, but is available to him for the asking (James 1:5). The beautiful thing about this wisdom is that it is three-dimensional: with it we can be in good relationship with God, in good harmony with our fellowman, and at peace with ourselves.
