God Is Love

by Tim Davidson | A Verse A Day

“The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

(1 John 4:8 NASB)

Anyone who does not love has never been introduced to, or become acquainted with, God. They do not know God as He truly is. But we are born of God through the new birth and therefore are born of love, for God is love. Love is now the very nature of our being. Love is our way of life because we have received life from God.

The Message Bible says: “The person who refuses to love doesn’t know the first thing about God, because God is love—so you can’t know him if you don’t love.”

We try to love others with our own human love and it only works to a small extent. When we tire, or grow weary, or give up, it’s because human love is limited. It’s based in selfish expectation. Human love expects something back for itself.

If I love you, then I expect you to love me back or I can’t love you anymore. God loves differently. He loves unconditionally at all times. That makes Him a Master. God’s love is not self-oriented and it’s not just for the recipient. It’s for others to enjoy as well by association. One who doesn’t love in this manner doesn’t know God, for God is love.

Today’s Thought to Take With You:

My human love is limited and fails, but God’s love is perfect and powerful in me.
