Pastor Ray worked for 12 years in the field of art and design. After studying commercial art, he worked for the Dayton-Hudson Corporation. Later he had his own business for which he designed, made, and sold his own artwork.

In 1982, Ray began to do visual work on the building at Living Word Christian Center in Brooklyn Park and was later added to the staff as the ministry head of the building presentation department. After several years of involvement in the prayer ministry, Ray was added to the pastoral staff of Living Word as assistant to Pastor Lynne Hammond in the prayer ministry.
