In Matthew 3:11, John the Baptist said "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear, he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire."

I've heard it said many times that you don't need to speak in tongues to be filled with the Holy Spirit. I don't know how many times I've heard folks say "I've received the Holy Spirit but not the tongues." They say, "the tongues aren't that important."

Now notice what our scripture says about when we are baptized in the Holy Spirit: "He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and Fire!" So when we are baptized in the Holy Spirit we are not just baptized in the Holy Spirit but also with fire!

I used to think that the fire was the power of the Holy Spirit but in Acts 2 God tells us exactly what the fire is:
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
(Acts 2:3-4)
So we can see from this scripture that the fire is really referring to the tongues. You don't get one without the other. So what good are the tongues in the life of the believer?

I'm glad you asked.

The prayer language of tongues has several functions, such as praying the will of God into our lives when we don't know how to pray (Romans 8), building up ourselves in the most holy faith (Jude 20) and edifying ourselves so we can become more sensitive to the voice of God.

However, one of the most important things praying in tongues does is to release the Power of God in our lives. Jesus said:
But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
(Acts 1:8)
What is the "power"? The word power here is the Greek word "dunamus" and it literally means "miracle working power." Jesus said we could do the same works He did because He was sending us the Holy Spirit. We are able to do the works Jesus did through manifestation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit just like they operated through Jesus Himself.

The Holy Spirit showed me a gallon of gasoline and told me that there was power in that gallon of gasoline; however, the power is not released unless or until fire comes in contact with the gasoline.

You see, the fire releases the power. That's how praying in tongues works in the life of the Spirit filled believer. The fire (tongues) releases the power of God in our lives.

If you want more power, if you want more gifts of the Spirit manifesting in your life, begin to pray in tongues as much as you can and the fire will release the power!
