Jesus is our Comforter, our Helper, our Intercessor, our Advocate. Everything that we need on earth, Jesus left with us through the Holy Spirit to accomplish the will of the Father.

So, if the Father wills it, then the Holy Spirit can accomplish it through you if you allow Him to do it.

When you receive Jesus into your heart and are born again, one of the promises that is fulfilled in your life at that point is the fact that your spiritual nature is changed. Let's look at how this takes place.

When someone gets born again their spiritual nature is changed because God gives them a new heart and a new spirit. The words "heart" and "spirit" are used interchangeably in the Scriptures. The Word says you have a brand new heart. All things have become new, and old things have passed away as far as your spirit man is concerned.
Therefore if any person is (ingrafted) in Christ the Messiah, he is a new creation (a new creature altogether), and old (previous moral and spiritual condition) has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!
(2 Cor. 5:17 AMP)
So now what do you have to do to allow the Holy Spirit to accomplish God's purpose through you? Every day you have to do something about your flesh and your mind because they did not become new when your spirit man did.

Your flesh should not rule you. You have dominion over your flesh, so when your flesh cries out, you can subdue it with the Word of God. Your mind still wants to think the way it used to think and go down the same little trails it used to go down.

Learning To Control Our Flesh
Get in the Word of God to renew your mind and change those patterns of thinking with the help of the indwelling Holy Spirit. Whether you know it or not, your mind and emotions have a voice too.

One of our biggest problems in the Body of Christ has been that we have operated so much in our emotions—our soulish realm—that when the Spirit moves and the outpouring of the Spirit comes, we do not know the difference.

Many times we do not think it is God or the outpouring of the Spirit, because our emotions have not been affected. We think, "Well, it can't be God because I don't feel anything" or "It can't be God because I don't feel like jumping up or shouting hallelujah or singing."

It may be that the Spirit of God is moving through a quiet peace doing a deep work, and He wants you to be still. After all, the Holy Spirit doesn't need to jump and shout to do His work in you. Sometimes more is accomplished in a quiet time!

We need to renew our minds by the Word of God and by the Spirit of God so that we can recognize the difference between the Spirit of God moving and our emotions reacting and not reacting.

Otherwise, we can get caught in the trap of letting our emotions get so involved when the Spirit moves that we do something within ourselves to keep the move going. You see, when this happens, the Spirit of God is not operating, and the results are of the flesh.

We need to yield our spirit to the Holy Spirit within so that we can recognize the flow and move with it.

Learning To Discern
When you are asked to do something and the Spirit of God is not in it, your spirit will know it, and you will know not to do it. If someone calls you up and asks you to do something and you do not have an unction (anointed leading) by the Spirit of God to do it, then you had better not do it.

Do not try to work up something or speak out of your own human spirit. That never works.

One of the most frequently asked questions I get from people is this; "How can I know I am being led by the Holy Spirit and not just reacting to my own flesh or being deceived by Satan? My answer is always, "Go to the Word."
Beloved, do not put faith in every spirit, but prove (test) the spirits to discover whether they proceed from God; for many false prophets have gone forth in to the world. By this you may know (perceive and recognize) the spirit of God: every spirit which acknowledges and confesses [the fact] that Jesus Christ, the Messiah, [actually] has become man and has come in the flesh is of God—has God for its source. And every spirit which does not acknowledge and confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh [but would annul, destroy, sever, disunite Him] is not of God—does not proceed from Him. This [non-confession] is the [spirit] of the antichrist, [of] which you heard that it was coming, and now it is already in the world.

Little children, you are of God—you belong to Him—and have [already] defeated and overcome them [the agents of the antichrist], because He Who lives in you is greater (mightier) than he who is in the world. They proceed from the world and are of the world, therefore it is out of the world [its whole economy morally considered] that they speak and the world listens (pays attention) to them.

We are [children] of God. Whoever is learning to know God—progressively to perceive, recognize, and understand God by observation and experience—and to get an ever clearer knowledge of Him—listens to us; and he who is not of God does not listen or pay attention to us. By this we know (recognize) the Spirit of Truth and the spirit of error.
(1 John 4:1-6 AMP)
We all have a responsibility to test the spirits. If you ever have a question of whose voice you are hearing, simply ask it to acknowledge and confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh.

If you don't get any acknowledgment, you will know it is not the voice or prompting of the Holy Spirit. Also, if anything you are feeling prompted to do or being asked by someone else to do does not line up with the Word or goes against the nature and character of God, don't do it.
This is He Who came by (with) water and blood [His baptism and His death], Jesus Christ, the Messiah; not by (in) the water only, but by (in) the water and the blood. And it is the [Holy} Spirit Who bears witness, because the [Holy} Spirit is the Truth.
(1 John 5:6 AMP)
Rest assured...the Holy Spirit is the Truth and will never lead you to do something that contradicts the Word.
