Although presidential and congressional elections often dominate national headlines, there is more to the political arena. Political positions that are available at the local level might not be as glamorous as working in the Oval Office or in Congress, but they are just as important. Have you ever thought about running for a position in your local government?

Over the years, local governments have been given greater responsibilities in regard to the creation of public policies. Though a policy may be created on the federal or state level, local governments are required to implement the law. The decisions made by local governments make a significant impact on housing, education, crime, the arts, transportation, parks & recreation, and the environment.

Most lawmakers have their own agendas. Why not elect Christians to these positions so that God's agenda will go forward? Why couldn't that person be you?

Make A Difference
It's time for Christians to take a stand. Policies that go against the Word of God, such as same-sex marriages, abortion rights and so on, are being enforced by the legal system because the people who support these policies have made their voices heard. They have become proficient at using the law and influencing government officials.

When Christians are seated in government, God will be able to use them to ensure that our rights as Christians will not be infringed upon.

Contrary to what you may think, you can make a difference; you can! Only one person is needed to get the ball rolling. You can start by becoming involved in your child's PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) or the local neighborhood watch.

You can also begin attending town hall meetings to find out more regarding the issues that are affecting your community. Many times your local library will post information about what is going on in your town.

Another area to look in is your city council, which runs the city, presents bills to the mayor and comes up with the budget for the year. County commissioners are similar to members of a city council.

They introduce laws, control the county budget and are the governing body for the county. These offices are full time positions. If you cannot run for these positions, you can still become involved by ensuring that your vote elects the right people for the job.

Local governments are always in need of people who want to get involved. These offices depend on volunteers to effectively address the needs of the community. Cities and counties often hold workshops, classes and leadership seminars to explain the various processes within the local government.

Get Involved
Contact your local government office to find out if they have any of these programs available, and take advantage of the resources that are provided.

Of course, you should continue to pray for your community and country, but do not forget to add the natural to the spiritual. Get involved! Your involvement at the local level will inevitably be felt throughout all levels of government. Be the one who gets the "party" started!
