How do we combat evil, fearful, or wrong thoughts that the devil puts in our minds?

We have authority over the devil and the thoughts that he would try to inject into our minds. "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you" (James 4:7).

I think the way Jesus dealt with wrong thoughts is the best way for us to deal with them. Let's take a look at how He did this:
The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: 'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"

Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"
(Matt. 4:3-7)
Jesus dealt with these thoughts by speaking the Word of God to them. This is the same way we should deal with any thought that is wrong.

A friend of mine, who is a physician, was telling me one of the ways he treats patients who have problems with their thoughts.

He gives them the first three words of this verse: "Casting down imaginations..." (2 Cor. 10:5). We cast down imaginations by speaking the Word of God to them.
