When I sit down to read my Bible, I have a very difficult time understanding what I read. How can I understand my Bible better?

It's important to realize that God is the giver of spiritual understanding. He can give understanding, enabling you to comprehend spiritual things. You need to pray to God asking Him to give you spiritual understanding.

Here is an example of such a prayer:
I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better.

I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and His incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of His mighty strength.
(Eph. 1:16-19 NIV)
The Apostle Paul is praying for ordinary, everyday Christians. He asked God to do several things for them. He asked God to give Christians a spirit of wisdom (knowing how to apply spiritual things to their life) and revelation (uncovering).

God can give us the wisdom to apply Biblical truths to our lives. He also is the One that uncovers and reveals Biblical truths. My advice for you is to pray this simple prayer for yourself and others on a daily basis. This will release God to give you understanding.
