Can you give me a biblical example of the mercy of God? I'm having a hard time believing He's able to forgive me for the terrible sins I've committed.

There are an abundance of recorded events that demonstrate the extent of the mercy of God, which results in forgiveness, plus many other mercies. One specific event deals with a prostitute named "Rahab."

She lived in the city of Jericho and received the two spies of Israel.
But Joshua had said to the two men who had spied out the country, "Go into the harlot's house, and from there bring out the woman and all that she has, as you swore to her."

And the young men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab, her father, her mother, her brothers, and all that she had. So they brought out all her relatives and left them outside the camp of Israel.
(Josh. 6:22-23)
God forgave Rahab, and she eventually married an Israeli by the name of Salmon. He was the great, great grandfather of King David who was a forefather of Joseph, the husband of Mary.

That makes Rahab a great, great, (etc.) grandmother of Joseph. God is so rich in mercy that He not only forgave Rahab, but He put her in the Holy Family's lineage.
Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse, and Jesse begot David the king. David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah....

And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.
(Matt. 1:5-6, 16)
What the psalmist declared is ever-so-true: "For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You" (Ps. 86:5).
