Sometimes we are so hard on ourselves. We know God is willing and able to help us with anything; however, we have no confidence that we will follow through, stick with the plan, or just plain keep our word.

We have so many past failures for Satan to accuse us with, "Yeah, God's willing and able, but you are the weak link in this chain. You know all this faith stuff, but you won't do it, you lazy-no-good-faith-failure."

There is something that you can do, with God's help, to build your confidence and shut the devil up. That is to declare a holy fast and set yourself up to win.

There are many benefits to be obtained from fasting. One is that fasting (abstaining from a substance or activity) will build your confidence in your ability to follow through, to access what God offers, and give Him "room" to work in your life.

You prove to yourself and Satan, "See, I will and can follow through in putting spiritual matters first and putting my body under the Spirit's authority." Just as Satan lies about God's ability or willingness, he lies about our ability and willingness.

Perhaps you have trouble with food, debt-spending, compulsive shopping, talking, gossip, etc. and have no confidence about controlling those things. Go to God and ask Him to help you plan a fast for one, two, or three days (set yourself up to win) and ask Him to bless (empower) the fast.

The scripture to stand on for this request is 1 John 5:14-15, "And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He heareth us: and if we know that He heareth us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him."

I promise you, God is for you living a Spirit-controlled life.

After requesting God's blessing, let your family know and then get their support, if possible. Then go ahead and begin. When the one, two, or three day battle is over, celebrate your victory by telling the devil, "See, I do have a God who does help me and is strong in my weakness. I will to and can access that help and let Him change me."

As your confidence grows, God's permission to work in your life will grow. Faith without works is indeed dead.

Remember, confidence means literally "with fidelity." Fidelity is another word for faith which indicates that its source is a covenant, an agreed upon set of promises. Therefore, self-confidence means, "I can count on myself to keep my word; God can count on me; I am accountable.

Prove it to yourself and fast something. With God's help, you can do it!

Here are some scriptures to review and study that
deal with the topics of confidence and fasting:
  • Proverbs 3:25-26; 14:26-27
  • Hebrews 3:6, 14; 10:35-39
  • 1 John 3:18-24; 5:14-15
  • Isaiah 58:6-11
