I love Australia—my homeland, my nation! To me it is the greatest land in the world. On my way to church recently I thought to myself how blessed we are to live in a land where no one had to go through a metal detector or be frisked for guns, knives or bombs when we arrived. No one would be leaving with thoughts that maybe the bus or their car would blow up etc. Yet unfortunately, in many nations of the world this would be the norm. How we take such freedom for granted, how little importance we place on some of the most valuable gifts in life.

The wisdom of Solomon tells us that each generation learns nothing from history. Each generation thinks they know better and can do better. Ecc. l1:9-11 says:
That which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which it may be said, “See, this is new”? It has already been in ancient times before us. There is no remembrance of former things, Nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come By those who will come after.
Winston Churchill recognised: “The further we look back in history, the further we can see into the future.”

As I write many nations throughout the world are at war, be it civil war, fighting and killing. In these places fear, death, hatred and suffering are never far away. Here in Australia we live in a land blessed with peace, security and prosperity, but for how long? As Christian believers it is our God given duty to pray, to intercede and stand in the gap for our nation. Yet how many Christians or churches fulfill this obligation? It seems few Christians are willing to pray and defend this God given freedom. I am not just a minister of the Gospel, I am also a fifth generation Australian—I have dual citizenship. I am a citizen of heaven as well as Australia. I have a stewardship for what the Lord has given me here in this great land and with that privilege also comes responsibility!

Christians And Politics –  Charles Finney
The great Charles Finney wrote: “The church must take right ground in regard to politics. Politics are part of any Christian nation and that’s because of the stewardship aspect. And Christians must do their duty to their country as part of their duty to God. God will bless or curse this nation according to the course that Christians take in politics”. (Finney Lectures XV, page 281).

Noah Webster - (author of the world’s oldest dictionary).
Webster  stated, “The moral principles and precepts contained in the Scriptures ought to form the basis of all civil constitutions and laws. All the evils which men suffer from crime, injustice, oppression and war, proceed from their neglecting the precepts contained in the Bible.” (‘The History of the USA’ 1832)

Prime Minister Alfred Deakin
Prime Minister Alfred Deakin (voted in three times) wrote: “God preserve this people and grant its leaders unselfish fidelity and courage to face all of the trials for the sake of the brotherhood. Thy blessing has rested upon us here yesterday and we pray that it may be the means of  creating and fostering throughout all Australia, a Christlike citizenship.” (Alfred Deakins Prayers 1890).

Abraham Lincoln
“It is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.”

We Are The Salt Of The Earth
Scripture says we are the salt of the earth (and the nation)! At the time this was written salt was used as a preservative, it stopped things from going rotten.
You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
(Matt 15: 13-16)
So when is the last time that you prayed for your nation, the Prime Minister or other leaders? Do you love your nation enough to spend time on your knees, interceding for your homeland? It’s not enough to leave it to others, those ‘called to that ministry,’ God requires it of all of us! First Timothy 2: 1-3 is explicit on this matter: “I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. As you make your requests, plead for God’s mercy upon them, and give thanks."

Pray this way for kings and all others who are in authority, so that we can live in peace and quietness, in godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Saviour.”

We are either rebuilding our nation’s foundations or we are helping to destroy them. So let me ask you, how desperate are you to see God restored into Australian politics? Let me challenge your thinking, someone has to shake the church out of its complacency! We have enjoyed over 100 years of freedom, but that does not guarantee us even another year of freedom. It’s stewardship that makes all the difference. We are accountable to God for our nation according to the stand we take. That’s the way we can preserve the freedoms won by our forefathers.

Federation Prayers
Our nation was founded in prayer. The First Parliament was opened in 1901 with prayer as it established its authority under God. This was the prayer read on the historic day:
Almighty God, we humbly beseech Thee to regard with Thy Merciful favour the points of this land, now united in one Commonwealth. We pray for Thy servants of the Governor-General ...and all who are or who shall be associated with them in the administration of their offices...We pray Thee at this time you vouchsafe Thy special blessings upon the Federal Parliament now assembling for the first session, and .....direct and prosper all their consultations to the advancement of Thy glory and to the true welfare of the people of Australia, through The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all, evermore.
