God Has Always Wanted People to Know He Is Here.
In the Garden of Eden, God wanted to be near Adam and Eve so He walked with them in the cool of the day. In the wilderness, when He brought the Israelites out of Egypt, He wanted to be near them so He filled the tabernacle with the shining cloud of His visible presence (Ex. 40:38).

Today God still wants to be near us. He still fills the tabernacle with His presence. But unlike in the Old Testament where that tabernacle was a man-made tent, under the New Covenant we as believers are His tabernacle. We are the temple of the living God. And the visible sign that He’s moving with us and upon us in supernatural power is speaking in other tongues.

Tongues Is a Sign He Is With Us
For centuries, this visible sign of His presence was virtually lost to the Church. But in 1900, God began to restore it. He drew a group of spiritually hungry believers from all around the country to a Bible school in Topeka, Kansas, to study Acts 2 and seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

On January 1, 1901, the leader of the group, Brother Charles Parham, laid hands on a woman named Agnus Osman. The Holy Spirit came on her, and she not only spoke in tongues—she spoke in fluent Chinese. She’d never heard Chinese spoken before. She didn’t understand what she was saying. Yet experts verified she articulated the language perfectly.

Talk about a supernatural sign of God’s presence! That was astounding. But it was just the beginning of what God intends to do. According to the New Testament, He wants speaking in tongues to serve not only as a sign to us and to others, but to serve many other purposes, too.

Speaking in Tongues Helps Us in All Kinds of Powerful Ways!
  • It opens doors of revelation to us, giving us access to “the profound and bottomless things of God…in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the [Holy] Spirit…with spiritual language…” (1 Cor. 2:10, 13).
  • It builds us up on our most holy faith (Jude 20).
  • It enables us to speak mysteries unto God (1 Cor. 14:2).
  • It empowers us to pray supernaturally, beyond our human understanding because, as Romans 8 says, “The [Holy] Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness; for we do not know what prayer to offer nor how to offer it worthily as we ought, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings to deep for utterance. (vv. 26–27)

I think one of the most valuable things I ever learned about prayer is that we as human beings can’t pray effectively on our own. We can only observe things from an earthly standpoint. We don’t know the conditions underlying the situations we’re praying about. We don’t know the future. Our natural understanding is extremely limited.

When we pray in other tongues, however, we break through those limitations. We become vehicles through which the Holy Spirit can do His praying. We pray the language of heaven which is perfectly and divinely designed to release God’s power on earth. Right now, more than ever, we need to cultivate and grow in that language!

We Need to Cultivate That Language!
Jesus is coming soon and our mission, as pray-ers, is to prepare the way for His coming. We’re in the last of the last days. Things are changing fast. Just as the world’s natural vocabulary is rapidly expanding right now to keep pace with the times, our spiritual vocabulary needs to be expanding too.

We should be believing every day to become more articulate in our spiritual language. Rather than getting comfortable and praying the same way we always have, we should be stirring up our hunger for more of God and developing our “measure of faith” (Rom. 12:3) so we can keep progressing in other tongues.

A man of God I deeply respect recently said in a prophecy, “There are still vast continents of the Spirit that have never been explored.”

Precious praying friend, the time has come to explore those continents! So I want to encourage you in the coming days to pray on out into the realm of the spirit. Pray further and further, and higher and higher, with new words and new expressions, in new depths, new lengths, and new heights. Release with ever greater boldness and utterance the unique language God has given you. Grow in it exponentially!
