"When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart" (Matt. 13:19).

Some people think we don't really need to do children's church or Sunday school. They reason that since the children are born again, they'll hear the Word in big church and they'll just pick it up.

It's true that they will pick up some things, but the body of Christ has lost millions of our kids because they didn't get fed the Word on a level they could understand. Children's Church is an exciting place for kids to learn God's Word in a way they can understand and remember.

Children's Church?
The concept of children's church may be new to you, so let's take a minute and compare it with a more familiar way of teaching children God's Word: Sunday School. The two are similar, but there are some important differences.

In Sunday School, children are divided into small groups by age or grade level. In children's church you generally put all the elementary children (first through sixth grades) in one large classroom for a combined teaching time. (Ideally, children should be exposed to both types of learning environments, as each setting has something good to offer.)

In children's church the emphasis of teaching is on the Bible principles, whereas in Sunday School, the emphasis of teaching is on the Bible stories. The children's church method of teaching gives you more freedom to develop a teaching on a particular subject for several weeks.

It is not possible to teach everything children need to know about such important subjects as prayer, faith or love in one lesson. In a children's church format, you have the flexibility to spend a month or two teaching about each one of these subjects.

A children's church format gives children an opportunity to worship God together in a large group. Having all the children come together in a combined worship service, gives greater opportunity for a manifestation of the corporate anointing and the gifts of the Spirit.

Combining all the children into one large class makes a better use of your resources. Not all children's workers are equally talented in all areas. Some may be excellent at teaching, but not have the flair for drama that another worker might have. Others may be anointed to lead children into the presence of God in worship. When all the workers pool their talents and minister in their area of strength, your children will benefit.

Your children's workers will also benefit. Instead of being alone with the children in a self-contained classroom week after week, they will have a chance to see other children's workers in action. They will find themselves growing in their ability to flow with others and with the Holy Spirit.

A final benefit of the children's church program is that it provides a training ground for future workers, both adult workers and Junior workers. They can start out as ushers, observing all that goes on. Then, as they feel comfortable, they can take part in a drama skit or a puppet skit, and eventually move into a position of responsibility within your children's church.
