You can tell the adults who were never trained. The man who comes in from work, drops his clothes wherever he is, leaving his wife to pick up behind him like his mother did, never was trained.

You can tell the adults who were never trained. The man who comes in from work, drops his clothes wherever he is, leaving his wife to pick up behind him like his mother did, never was trained.

Look at professional athletes. Would teams ever win any games if the coach came out to the football field and said:

"Now, fellows, it is such a beautiful day today. It sure would be nice to go to the beach. There is such a nice breeze, sunshine, and everything. Of course, you know we have a big game coming up next week, the most important game of the season, a championship game. I don't want to put any pressure on you or anything like that.

"But you need a little more practice, a little more exercise. If it is all right with you, maybe we could spend a couple of hours out here playing. Can I get a vote here? Are you fellows willing to do this?"

No, no, no. The coach does not ask you anything. He tells you what you are going to do, when you are going to do it, how you are going to do it, where you are going to do it, and how long you are going to do it.

He will never lift a finger to touch you. He will not use force or manipulation. But if you do not do what he says, you will not play next week or any other time.

Are you following what I mean by make? He is in authority over that team, and the team respects him. If you get authority over your children when they are very young, they will respect you also.

The Book says to train them up in the way they should go, not the way they want to go. Everything they do in the natural is usually contrary to the right way to do it, according to the Word. Have you ever noticed how easy it is for you to do what is wrong, and how hard to do what is right?

The easiest thing in the world is to eat nine pieces of pie. But it takes blood, sweat, and tears to push away from the table and not eat even the second piece of pie. You open the refrigerator, and the ice cream is saying, "Eat me, eat me, eat me." I mean, you have to work hard at doing what is right in anything. But the younger you were when you learned, the easier it was.

You can tell the adults who were never trained. The man who comes in from work, drops his clothes wherever he is, leaving his wife to pick up behind him like his mother did, never was trained.

Training starts as a child. You can learn some things and change some patterns as an adult. But it is uphill work. It is like trying to swim upstream. It is a lot easier when you are floating downstream as a baby, and mama and papa are moving the boat in the direction it is supposed to go.

You had better have your kids brush their teeth, or they will not brush them as adults. You had better train them to wash behind their ears and the backs of their necks. You had better have them pick up their toys. Sometimes you have to tell them nineteen times, but if you do not give up, you win.

You have to make them go to bed, or they will stay up until they wear out, and wear you out in the process. Children do not ever go to bed on their own. I do not care if you try to be nice and give them an extra hour. They will still cry over that.

You might as well put them to bed when you said you were to start with. They will take advantage of your mercy and whine and cry. Being firm and consistent will pay handsome dividends in the end.
