Do we have control over whether we are homosexual, bisexual or heterosexual? Could someone actually be born gay?

Many psychologists are convinced that certain individuals are prone to homosexuality because of genetics, thereby justifying an ungodly lifestyle. Is this really true? Is there such a thing as a "gay gene"?

The gay gene theory evolved as a result of a study by Dr. Simon LeVay at the Salk Institute in San Diego, California, that suggested the size of the hypothalamus in the human brain determines sexual orientation. Dr. LeVay theorized that the larger the hypothalamus, the more likely an individual would be gay.

However, his results were inconclusive and remain unsubstantiated. To date, there has been no scientific evidence to prove a direct cause and effect relationship between genetics and homosexuality.

Gender vs. Sexual Orientation
The American Psychological Association (APA) supports the theory that biology, including genetic or hormonal factors, plays a significant role in a person's sexual orientation. In addition, the APA does not consider sexual orientation to be a conscious choice that can be voluntarily changed.

However, the APA has not produced viable scientific data to support their statements. None of us chose to be male or female. Our gender was predetermined by the orientation of X and Y-chromosomes in DNA. However, contrary to the beliefs of the APA, our sexual orientation is a matter of choice.

If homosexuality were truly genetic, it would be evident in identical twins, since they share the same DNA. If one twin is gay, then the other should be as well.

Science will never be able to link genetics with homosexuality because a gay lifestyle was not God's natural intent for the human body. In Romans 1:, Paul labels homosexuality as an act against nature:
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.
(vv. 26-27)
Also notice what Paul says is the root of homosexuality: lust. Homosexuality is the result of a lustful heart. It has nothing to do with genetics. The "born gay" theory is bogus. Human beings have the ability to choose their sexual orientation.

Making A Choice
Homosexuality, like every other decision in life, is a choice. It is a mental state that is produced by what a person hears, sees and thinks about himself or herself.

Because most homosexuals report having sexual feelings about the same sex at an early age, psychologists believe they must have been born gay. However, there are many psycho-social explanations that reveal that homosexuality is largely a matter of conditioning.

Our thinking and behaviors are largely based on our experiences and environments.

Psychologists would also have us believe that a person who participated in a homosexual lifestyle cannot revert to heterosexual patterns. This is totally untrue and goes against the laws of psychology itself. By manipulating the system of rewards, stimuli and controls, behavior can always be modified.

People usually succumb to correction when there is a standard or a control that tells them what they are doing is wrong. To remove the correction, the standard must be lowered by weaving the action into the normal pattern of society. This concept is in line with the basis of sociology—whatever the norms and values of a society may be will be accepted by that society.

The current trend with homosexuality is to try to make it a norm in society.

Homosexuality is not an issue of birth; it is an issue of choice. We all have choices in how we live our lives. It is a terrible thing to attempt to blame birth as a cause to sin. Yes, we were born into sin, but we can thank God that we are not subject to our natural birth. Jesus has given us a way out of sin.

Experience A Rebirth
"I was born this way" is what most homosexuals say to justify their actions. Leviticus 18:22 warns that it is an abomination against God for a man to lay down with another man as he does with a woman.

Humans were born with a sin nature and that is why Christ died—to free us from that nature. Through Christ we can all be born again. Our growth in the Word of God enables us to desire the things of God and align our lives with His Word (Col. 3:2).

Homosexuality is a manifestation of the sinful nature of man that has not been subjected to the Word of God. For example, if children grew up thinking it was OK to steal and were never corrected, they would become thieves—especially if the people around them reinforced their actions.

It is the same thing with homosexuality. If a person grew up in an environment that made homosexuality OK, then more than likely he or she would grow up thinking there's nothing wrong with that lifestyle.

It is interesting to note that most homosexual men and women have a childhood history of being sexually molested by another male or female. Sexual molestation can lead to a homosexual lifestyle, either because the victim's self-esteem is destroyed or because they do not know how to align their thinking to a heterosexual lifestyle.

When a person has lived with a particular sin long enough, whether it be stealing, cheating, lying, fornicating or homosexuality, they move into lasciviousness. At that point, what they are doing will seem natural because they cannot stop. However, it is not over for that individual; Jesus came to set the captives free.

Once we see in the Bible that something we are doing is wrong, we must then make a decision to change. Jesus Christ has freed us from sin. Romans 3:25 says, "Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God."

Through the blood of Jesus, we can be cleansed from all sin and live in victory.

It Won't Be Easy!
This is not to say that once a homosexual becomes a Christian, he or she will no longer struggle with the residue of his or her previous lifestyle. However, by accepting Christ, sin is destroyed, and through training, counseling and support, people have the ability to transform their spirits, minds and bodies, which ultimately leads to a change in their lifestyles.

There is no such thing as a "gay gene." Homosexuality is a choice. Regardless of what happened in our childhoods, there is no excuse for living sinfully once we have come into the knowledge of the Gospel of Christ.

It's time to accept responsibility for the decisions we make and begin to make choices that are in line with the will of God. Remember, as Christians, we are not looking for a way to sin; we are looking for a way out of it!
