When I was a young child I had an unbelieving father that didn't know the ways of God. You see, he didn't receive the Lord until I was about 15 years old and even then he hadn't renewed his mind to the Word of God.

My father was always talking about the bad things in people's lives. My uncle was an ungodly young man who was always carousing and getting into trouble, so my father was always speaking about how evil he was.

The Power Of Words
One day my father got mad at me and began to say that I was just like my uncle. As soon as he said that to me all the evil things he had spoken about my uncle came rushing into my mind. I can't tell you how much that hurt me and kept on hurting for many years.

Many times we as parents will speak out things over our children like "you'll never amount to anything," "you're going to turn out just like so-and-so," "you're no good," or "you're a liar," etc. When we do this we are conditioning our children to be just exactly what we say.

The power of life and death are in our tongues. We should be speaking words of blessings over our children and not cursing.

When our children were young and they did something wrong, instead of just yelling at them and telling them how terrible they were, we would say something like this "Daniel you don't act like that because you are a proper child" "You shouldn't lie because you are a proper child."

Guess what happened? He grew up to be a proper child.

As parents we need to be very careful to guard our lips when talking to our children and speak only words of life over them and not words of death. We are helping to form their future by the words of our mouth so let's speak blessings and not cursing.
