The God kind of love, that we base our marriage and relationships on, is not rooted in selfishness (what do I get out of this), but in commitment.
The month of February is earmarked for promoting romance.

Everywhere we look there are roses galore, chocolate heart candy boxes, and cupids.

The unfortunate thing is that the kind of love being promoted is not God’s love. It is a worldly love. It is a selfish love being promoted to make you think, “What will I get? How will my husband or wife show me he loves me?”  If we are not careful to guard our heart we can fall into that trap.

God’s idea of love is not a feeling. The very foundation of all creation is based on God’s love for us and what He gave away—His Son.

We need to remember to not let the world’s ideas of love sneak into our heart. The God kind of love, that we base our marriage and relationships on, is not rooted in selfishness (what do I get out of this), but in commitment. I know, the last thing you want to hear is that love is all about giving. I know how much you give already, everyday to your husband, your children, your parents, your friends. But God has given us the ability to love, His way, through His Word.

The God Kind of Love
The God kind of love is different from natural human love. The best way to cultivate and grow God's love in us is to speak and meditate on God's Word.
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
(Heb. 4:12 NIV)
I like this verse because it tells me if I meditate on the Word of God it will judge my thoughts and attitudes. I can't always tell when I am having a bad attitude or wrong thoughts. My soul or self always wants to protect itself. But the Word of God will expose those things that are contrary to Him.
Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily.
It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly. Love (God's love in us) does not insist on its own rights or its own way, for it is not self-seeking; it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong].
It does not rejoice at injustice and unrighteousness, but rejoices when right and truth prevail. Love bears up under anything and everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every person, its hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything [without weakening]. Love never fails [never fades out or becomes obsolete or comes to an end].
(1 Cor. 13:4-8)
So take time to meditate on these verses of scripture. Hide them in your heart. As the Word works on us it changes us.
