If you get the sense that your kids are not thankful for what you give, you may be giving too much. Worse yet, you could be giving them a sense of entitlement.
I love my children.

I want to give to them, but if I give too much will I teach them to be envious?

How do I know when I have given too much?
The two states – envious and grateful – have little to do with what a person actually receives. They have more to do with the character of the person. If you give something to entitled, envious people it profits them and you nothing. They just feel that you finally paid your debt to them.
- Dr. Henry Cloud, Boundaries with Kids
If you get the sense that your kids are not thankful for what you give, you may be giving too much. Worse yet, you could be giving them a sense of entitlement.

Dr. Cloud continues:
If you give to grateful people, they feel overwhelmed with how fortunate they are and how good you are. Parents need to help children work through their feelings of entitlement and envy and move to a position of gratitude.
Here are seven steps for teaching kids to be thankful.
  1. Teach your kids to tithe. Don’t give your kids money for the offering. Teach them to tithe from “their money.” Tithing is saying “Thank You” to God.
  2. NO is a good boundary word. It teaches your kids where you end and they begin.
  3.  Never give into manipulation. If your child is throwing a fit to get something, don’t give in. “A child who gets his own way brings his mother to shame” Proverbs 29:1
  4. Delay gratification.  Don’t give them everything they ask for.
  5. Teach your kids how to work and save up for something that they want. This also gives children a sense of control.
  6. Take a drive through the ghetto. When children see other kids that are needy and hungry it has a powerful impact on them.
  7. Encourage your children to serve others. When children learn how to serve others at church and through mission projects, it teaches them that their purpose in life is to meet the needs of others.
How do you teach your kids your kids to be thankful?
