KEEP YOUR FOCUS

Let's eliminate clutter and focus on our priorities...especially this time of year!

September 2010

Autumn is my favorite time of the year. And as fall approaches, when vacations are over, days are getting shorter, and everyone is getting back into that familiar routine: school, fall ministries, sports, etc., it can be a very busy time for everyone. That's why I would like to take a moment to remind you of some basic truths that will help keep your schedule a little less stressful.

John Maxwell, a well-known business leader, wrote an article on cfaith called "Clearing the Clutter." He makes some excellent points about keeping clutter out of your life so you can stay focused on your priorities. For example, Mr. Maxwell writes:

  • One of the common denominators of successful people is a single-minded focus that allows them to concentrate on first things first.
  • While many people squander their physical and mental abilities, successful people learn how to focus, concentrate, and persist.

Mr. Maxwell goes on to identify four types of clutter that we should strive to keep out of our lives:

Emotional
The price of holding on to emotional clutter is too high. Not only will it steal energy from your focus, but it has serious emotional and spiritual consequences as well.

Administrative

Early on I discovered the need for a system to help me deal with multiple projects and multiple deadlines. There's nothing magical about my system. Find one that works for you and do it.

Calendar

This is simply mastering the basic principle of time management; you must prioritize your work and spend your best effort on that which will yield the most return.

Trivia

Most people try to live in the path of a flood of trivial phone calls, emails, and meetings. I say get rid of the trivia.

Why should we strive to keep this kind of clutter out of our lives? Because we can then concentrate on what we do best!

Blessings to you and those you love,
