While it may not be as common in the United States, in many parts of the world people are quick to place a "curse" on somebody if they have been offended or hurt by that person.

As a Christian, if you don't know who you are in Christ, it is easy to give in to these types of spiritual attacks. Personally, I don't believe in curses or their ability to harm me because the greater One, Jesus Christ, lives in me.

Witchcraft, voodoo and "curses" thrive on a spirit of fear; in fact, fear is what enables them to operate in your life. The good news is that, as a Christian, you don't have to fear anything.

Because of what Jesus did on Calvary, you have been given the authority to enforce the devil's defeat in every area of your life.

You, therefore, don't have to become a victim to this type of satanic attack. I don't care what part of the world you live in; the Word of God and the blood of Jesus ate spiritual weapons that stop the devil in his tracks.

You have the power to break curses in the name of Jesus!

Occult Defined
According to Merriam Webster's Dictionary, occult is defined as "pertaining to supernatural phenomena or influences." While this definition may sound "spiritual," the occult is anything but spiritual.

In order for something to be spiritual, it has to be based on the Word of God. "Supernatural phenomena" that manifest from occult practices do not originate from God—they originate from the devil.

Witchcraft, sorcery, psychic consultation, Ouija boards and communicating with the dead through a spiritual medium are all part of the occult and are abominations in God's sight (Deut. 18:10-12).

People who become involved in such practices usually become entangled in generational curses and strongholds that can only be broken by the power of God.

Tapping into the demonic realm is a way of life for some people, and they look to the occult for healing, prosperity and success in relationships. Seeking "spiritual power" outside of the Word of God gives them a false sense of security.

Trusting in witch doctors, psychics or mediums comes from not knowing the true power that is available through God.

Satan Wants Your Seat
The devil has always been a counterfeiter; he tries to substitute his "fakes" for God's reality. As a believer, you hold a special position with God—you are seated with Christ in the heavenly realm.

Ephesians 2:4-6 says, "But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus." Now that's power!

In the same way that he deceived Eve and Adam in the Garden of Eden into abdicating their God-given positions, Satan desires to do the same thing to you. He knows that you exist on a spiritual level that far surpasses his, and so he uses fear to get you to step out of your position in Christ.

He does this by attempting to convince you that you can be just as powerful by tapping into his method of operation. What a deception!

A person who dabbles in the occult is trying to "play God" by using demonic methods. While the enemy would like people to believe that occult practices are spiritually effective and beneficial, they only lead to death and destruction.

For the born-again believer, there is no "curse," "hex," or occult practice that can harm or control you if you refuse to be moved from your "seat" of authority in Jesus.

Luke 10:19 says, "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you."

Because you are a member of the household of God, the devil is under your feet. Consequently, you don't have to fear what any witch, sorcerer or satanist tries to do to you.

Authority To Enforce The Victory
Victory comes from what you know. It's important that you get a firm understanding of your role and place in the body of Christ. Jesus defeated the devil through His death on the cross.

Colossians 2:15 (NIV) says that Jesus "...disarmed the powers and authorities, [and] made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross."

It's now up to you to enforce his defeat by standing on and speaking the Word in faith. The devil is subject to you, but do you have confidence in this?

In Matthew 15:18, Jesus let all believers know the type of authority that is afforded them; it lies in His name. He said, "Verily I say unto you, whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be hound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

Jesus intended for His followers to operate in His authority and not be whipped by the devil. Not only did He pass the baton of authority on to you, but He also said that Christians would do the works that He did to a greater degree (John 14:12-14).

This includes exercising authority over every kind of demonic activity, including witchcraft.

Breaking Curses Forever
Colossians 1:12-13 says, "Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet, to the partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son."

If you have been the victim of any type of occult activity, you don't have to stay in bondage any longer. By right of your salvation through Jesus, the powers of darkness are broken over your life. To continue to be subjected to demonic activity becomes an issue of personal choice.

You see, you have been created to dominate—not to be dominated. You can have confidence in this authority because it is backed by a covenant agreement between God and Abraham.

It started in the book of Genesis when God made a covenant with Abraham and promised that through him, all the people of the earth would be blessed (Gen. 12:2-3).

Jesus, the Messiah, was later born through Abraham's lineage. The inheritance that at one time was only destined for the Jews became available to everyone after Jesus' death.

Galatians 3:14 (NIV) says, "He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit."

Once you realize that you are a part of this covenant, through Jesus, you have the ability to activate it so that His power becomes a reality in your life. Two key steps to this curse-destroying process are: 1) meditating on the Word; and 2) speaking the Word of God in faith.

By pondering on the Word of God, you establish your heart in its truths. Faith comes through continual meditation on the Scriptures.

As you do this, you will obtain a revelation of who you are in Christ and the power that is available to you through His blood and His name.

As a result, when fear tries to come on you because someone has placed a curse on you, you can boldly stand up to those demonic influences and take authority over them in Jesus' name.

You don't have to have any fear when combating the devil because God "has your back."

The Word Takes Root
Once the Word is firmly rooted in the soil of your heart, faith will grow, and you can begin speaking God's promises over your life. Remember, you are no longer a part of the kingdom of darkness; therefore, curses have no dominion over you.

Isaiah 54:17 says, "No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn...."

Begin speaking what God has already said about you, and let Satan know that he can't interfere with your future. You are more than a conqueror through Christ Jesus (Rom. 8:37); greater is He Who is in you than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4).

As you regularly meditate on and speak the Word, the love of God will be stirred up within you and fear will be eradicated. Consequently, the enemy will have nothing with which to connect to you.

If you have allowed yourself to be subjected to a demonic curse, acknowledge that fear played a key role, then repent of it. Revelation 21:8 says that the fearful will have their place in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone.

This is because fear opposes your faith and connects you to the forces of hell. Fear is a sin, and the occult thrives on it. Determine to cultivate the love of God in your life rather than giving place to fear.

Once you repent, cover your life with the blood of Jesus and confess scriptures each day that deal with deliverance, victory, healing and prosperity. As you continue to exercise your authority, Satan's power will be broken over your life forever.
