"And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one" (1 John 5:8 KJV).

What is a witness? A witness is one that testifies. A witness is one that provides evidence. A witness is one that bears record. The Spirit is a witness. The water (or the Word) is a witness; and the blood of Jesus is a witness. What is The Spirit testifying to? The spirit is testifying to the Word, and the Blood.

The Spirit is the witness that Jesus is Lord, and our God is Jehovah. He is the only True God. Some people are confused because they think that even though there are different religions, we are all serving the same God. But that is not true. Psalm 83:18 tells us "That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth."

The Blood witnesses in the earth that Jesus is the Messiah. John was an eye-witness (John 19:34). He saw them take a spear and thrust it into Jesus' side, and saw blood and water come out. It was John who went into that tomb and saw that the tomb was empty. It was John who was there with the other disciples when Jesus walked through the wall and appeared to them after His resurrection.

Some were saying that Jesus didn't really die. Some were saying it wasn't real. But John said, "I saw Him killed; and I saw Him raised." John is testifying to the fact that Jesus is Lord. And just as John is a witness of these things, there is a more sure word that testifies of Jesus our Lord.

The Word agrees that the Blood testifies of the coming of the Messiah. It was even prophesied in the Old Testament (Isa. 53:5) that Jesus would be hung upon a cross, and that blood and water would come out of Him.

It said also in the Old Testament that He was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities. And the chastisement of our peace was upon Him. And with His multiple stripes we are healed. The Spirit testifies of the fact that Jesus is Lord. The Blood is the evidence that He died. And the Word is the record of the totality of His life.
