"After the fire a still small voice" (1 Kings 19:12).

The message of this verse is, "personality adjustment." In this situation, God was changing a man. In his early days, Elijah's life was stormy. He could recognize and relate to wind, earthquake, and fire. His whole prophetic career was characterized by these three qualities.

God was mellowing Elijah. By a set of circumstances and the Lord's personal dealings, the prophet ended up on the same mountain where Moses had received the Jewish law. The cave he found himself in could have been the same "cleft of the rock" in which the Lord hid Moses when His glory passed by and Moses was allowed to view God's back (Ex. 33:20-23).

In Moses' case, as the Lord passed by him, there was wind, earthquake, and fire. It was in this tumultuous setting that he was given the Ten Commandments.

Now we read that in this same location many years later Elijah was also met by the Lord. As in Moses' case, there was wind, earthquake, and fire. But God was not in any of these violent things. Instead, the Lord came in the form of "a still small voice" - a soft, whispering stillness.

Force leaves men hard and antagonistic. The still small voice is the expression of the "more excellent way" (1 Cor. 12:31). The gentleness of God is winning souls by grace whom might and wrath have failed to move.

O Lord, give us more of Your gentleness! Elijah came out of that cave not only with restored confidence, but with a changed nature. He was a better, nobler man. David expressed this transformation succinctly when he said of God: "Your gentleness has made me great" (Ps. 18:35).
