Seeing With the Eye of Faith

by Lynne Hammond | Devotions for the Praying Heart

… while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:18

Very often when we begin to watch and pray, all we have is a word from God. The only thing we know is what the Holy Spirit has quickened to us in the Bible and what He has revealed to our hearts. On the inside, we can see His plan and His will for a particular person or situation. But on the outside, there is no sign of it on the horizon. It looks to the natural eye like such a thing could never come to pass.

But, as pray-ers and people of faith, we don’t look at the seen realm. We look at the unseen.

We look with the eye of faith upon the promise of God. Then, like Elijah, we put our face down in prayer and we keep praying and believing, praying and believing, praying and believing, until we see that promise break through into this natural realm. We keep praying until there is an abundance of rain!

“I can’t do that,” somebody might say. “I’m not a great prophet like Elijah was. I’m just an ordinary Christian.”

That’s okay. The Bible says that Elijah was ordinary too. It says he “was a human being with a nature such as we have [with feelings, affections, and a constitution like ours]” (James 5:17 Amp). So when we pray, we can do exactly what he did. We can pray earnest, heartfelt, continued prayers that make tremendous power available—dynamic in its working!

On the chilly March night in 1972 when Lynne Hammond took her first step into a life of Spirit-led prayer, she had no idea what was about to happen. All she knew was the hunger in her heart for God wouldn’t let her sleep. In the few short months she’d been born again, her desire to fellowship with Him had grown so strong she could hardly contain it. “Help me, God!” she cried. “I want to know you. I want to be able to talk to you. Please, teach me to pray!”

Suddenly, a heavenly presence flooded the room. Lynne sensed waves of spiritual fire sweeping over her and a beautiful language began to flow like a river from within her. Although she’d never heard of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, she knew instantly, without a doubt—this was God!

What began that night soon blossomed into a life of prayer that ultimately became a ministry of prayer when, in 1980, Lynne and her husband, Mac, founded Living Word Christian Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Under Lynne’s leadership, the prayer ministry at Living Word has become an internationally recognized model for developing effective pray-ers in the local church.

A teacher and an author, Lynne publishes a newsletter called Prayer Notes, has written numerous books, and currently serves as the national prayer director for Daughters for Zion. Her passion for inspiring and leading others into the life of Spirit-led prayer continues to take her around the world to minister to believers whose heart cry, like hers, is “Lord, teach me to pray!”
