My first memory of my mother was when she brought life into this world. She brought my little sister, Suzi, home from the hospital. I thought, “Wow, how did my mom do that?” She had a baby and brought her home for me to play with. I thought that was the coolest thing in the world.
Now many years later, my mother, after raising five girls, welcomed into the family five sons-in-law, helped raised many grandchildren and is now influencing her great grandchildren. She is still bringing life and joy to our family. Our family is full of life and the love of God.
We all get together and have Thanksgiving and eat more than we need to with all the southern cornbread dressing and turkey. Then all the girls plan their shopping trip for next day. Then there is Christmas and the yearly party, which we have to schedule around three pastors and one youth pastor.
When you have dozens of people all opening presents from each other, it takes time and can get a little wild but we would not change it for anything. We are all serving God and full of the Holy Ghost; we all love each other and we all pray for each other.
A Mother’s Prayer
We grew up in a denomination that did not believe in the Holy Ghost, but good old Mom was looking for more of God. She knew there had to be more of God and wanted more of Him desperately in her life. She started going to these little Bible studies, and then all of a sudden these John Osteen books and Charles and Francis Hunter books started showing up all over the house. The rest of us did not know what to think about this new spiritual adventure, with her praying all the time and singing songs to the Lord.
I thank God for godly mothers who know how to pray. Mothers are the givers of life. They are the vessels that God uses to bring life into this world. The history of Mother’s Day starts with Eve giving birth. Throughout the Bible we read of godly mothers who prayed and changed nations.
One of my favorites is Hannah, Samuel’s mom. She poured out her soul before the Lord (1 Sam. 1:15). Many mothers spend hours praying and pouring out their soul to God. Here we see we have to be careful not to get into complaining or grief but instead pray and stay in faith (1 Sam. 1:16). The way to do this is spend time worshiping the Lord.
Then in the next chapter we read about how Hannah prayed in the spirit of prophecy. She prayed and prophesied at least ten future things to come. Hannah was such a beautiful woman of God who knew how to let her heart be touched by His presence.
Decades Of Honor
Here in the United States we celebrate Mother’s Day the second Sunday of May. On May 9, 1914, President Wilson issued a proclamation regarding Mother’s Day. It read,
Now, therefore, I Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the said Joint Resolution, do hereby direct the government officials to display the United States flag on all government buildings and do invite the people of the United States to display the flag at their homes or other suitable places on the second Sunday in May as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.
We love and we honor our mothers.
I get so intrigued watching my daughter-in-law, Amy, teach her son Devin. She is so good with him, so gentle, so kind, but very disciplined. It amazes me because he is so quick to respond and obey. This is such an important lesson much bigger than most of us realize.
Learning to obey your parents is training for learning to obey God. For most people the way they obey God is many times the way they responded and obeyed their parents. Amy also teaches Devin restraint. She will let him only have one cookie. It is a discipline that she is teaching him. She loves Devin enough to tell him no.
Prayer Focus
The following are some of the scripture verses that I pray over my two grown sons, their wives, and my grandkids and all of my spiritual children.
- The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and for our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law (Deut. 29:29).
- A wise son heeds his father’s instruction (Prov.13:1).
- A man of understanding keeps a straight course (Prov. 15:21).
- Train up a child in the way he should go (Prov. 22:6).
- Leave an inheritance to your children’s children (Prov. 12:22).
- Children obey your parents (Eph. 6:1).
- Your sons will stay connected to you (Isa. 62:5).
- Children in whom was no blemish, but had favor and skill in all wisdom and knowledge and understood all areas and have the ability in them to stand before important people (Dan. 1:4).
- One generation will commend your works to another, they will tell of your might acts (Ps. 145:4).
- ….Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life… (Deut. 19-20).
Dear Mothers—Thank you for being the woman of God that you are. We pray blessings, insights and honor upon you this day. Thank you for helping to raise up a godly generation to help affect nations. We thank you for your prayers and we ask you to continue to pray for the purpose of God to be fulfilled in the earth. Amen.
