I came home from our annual men's retreat Sunday night. I didn't have to stop and pick up some special treat, or surprise for the kids, something that I used to do for many years.

When the children were little and I was gone from home for a few days, picking up just the treat I knew they liked helped take away the sting of me being gone. I almost always come home with some kind of a treat or special surprise.

When they heard the car door slam and knew that I was home, they'd run to the door just waiting for me to come in. They'd give me hugs and kisses and follow me into the bedroom knowing I had something for them. I'd spring the treats and their excitement was fulfilled. It was as much fun for me as for them.

I knew what my children wanted then and I know what they want now. They are no longer looking for treats. I gave them each twenty bucks before I left. As I said, I know them well. God knows them better!

As God, His knowing us obviously exceeds our ability to know our children. Psalm 139 says,
O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.... Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.
(Ps. 139:1,4)
Because He actually knows every word we will speak before we speak it, then as a Father and a Holy God, what do you think He is going to do when the word on our tongue is not appropriate?

He's going to speak to us and put that word in check. He'll not just lead us to hesitate at an inappropriate word; He'll instead encourage us to speak an uplifting Word.

Second Timothy reveals this truth.
The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right. It is God's way of making us well prepared at every point, fully equipped to do good to everyone.
(2 Tim. 3:16-17)
This is saying that God will sometimes correct us like we would our children. He'll reveal what we shouldn't engage in and then through His Word, He'll instruct us on what would be the good and appropriate thing to say or do.

When we've put God's Word in our hearts, then God can use that Word to speak to us. At a time where we might speak an inappropriate word, the Holy Spirit will rise up in us, and bring God's Words to our remembrance.

We'll suddenly think of a verse, like Ephesians 4:29 that says, " Don't use bad language or corrupt communication. Instead, say only what is good and helpful to those you are talking to, and that will lift them up or bless them."

When that happens, that's the Holy Spirit leading you. Since God knows what you'll say before you say it, He'll help you make the adjustments, if you are paying attention to Him.

That is why Ephesians 4:30 says, "Don't grieve or cause the Holy Spirit sorrow by the way you live." God wants us to be sensitive to the leading of His Holy Spirit. When we are, then God can give us better words, better thoughts and His insight to the problems or situations we face daily.

God loves you as a Heavenly Father. Just as a parent teaches and helps their children to learn to talk and say what is and is not appropriate, so does the Lord.

He does this by the leading of the Holy Spirit who lives within every Christian. Romans 8:14 says, " For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God."

The key in all this then is to have the Word of God in our hearts and be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. This is why King David said; " I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you" (Ps. 119:11.)

He does know us better than we know us. He will help us if we don't ignore Him. He won't force us to do anything. We simply have to be sensitive and yielded to His Spirit and He'll help us experience His Supernatural help!
