I work in a profession where I'm very frequently verbally abused by customers. What is the best thing to do at those times?

Let me share two verses of Scripture that will help you: First, the Word says that "a soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger" (Prov. 15:1 NKJ).

The Bible gives great advice in this Scripture. When an angry person releases wrath or anger towards you, the best defense is to respond with a soft, kind answer. That type of answer will turn off his or her anger. If you answer back with harsh words, then you will only stir up more anger. It only gets worse!

I made a decision years ago that I would not allow people to control me, but I would control myself. When I find myself in a similar situation, I give soft, kind, non-threatening answers. I have found that this verse of scripture works.

The second Scripture to learn from is this: "Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing" (1 Peter 3:9 NIV).

You and I should never repay evil or insulting words with more evil. We should repay evil and insulting words with blessings (kind words and deeds). This is how God called us to live. We actually inherit a blessing from God as a result of living this way.

If you make a decision to respond this way, God will give you the ability to carry it out victoriously. Remember what the Word of God also declares:

"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me" (Phil. 4:13 KJV).
